Walmart car seat trade-in program launches: How to get your $30 gift card

Walmart’s first ever car seat trade-in program is underway.

The event started Monday and runs through Sept. 30. Nearly 4,000 Walmart stores are participating nationwide, according to CNN.

You can find a participating store online. In the Syracuse area, Walmart locations in East Syracuse, Cicero, Camillus and Clay are all taking part.

During the event, you can bring in up to two old car seats and get $30 Walmart gift cards you can use in-store or online, according to Walmart. Customers should bring car seats they want to trade in to the customer service counter.

Any car seat brand is accepted, but booster seats are not eligible, Walmart said.

“We wanted to use our size and scale to create an event that offered unprecedented access to trade in an outgrown car seat for a gift card – perfect for using on your baby’s next car seat,” Melody Richards, vice president of Walmart Baby, said in a statement, according to USA Today.

The old seats will then be taken for recycling. Walmart is partnering on the trade-in program with TerraCycle, a global waste management company that specializes in hard-to-recycle items like car seats.

TerraCycle founder and CEO Tom Skazy said the program will divert the plastic equivalent of about 35 million water bottles from landfills, according to CNN.

Target just wrapped up its own car seat trade-in event earlier in September. Since launching the program three years ago, Target has collected half a million seats and recycling over 11.9 million pounds of materials, according to USA Today.

Before Toys R Us went bankrupt, its Babies R Us chain ran car seat trade-in events as well.
