Giant Eagle supermarkets have asked customers to dispose or return certain lettuce products purchased from the stores since Monday, which may have been contaminated with E Coli bacteria.
The recall notice was issued Friday by a manufacturer that produces salads containing romaine lettuce sold at Giant Eagle, Get Go and Market District stores.
Giant Eagle reported the recall is in response to a CDC notice on romaine lettuce supplied from the Yuma, Ariz., area and packaged under the Great to Go brand.
“Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The recall is described in an email message sent to individual supermarkets from the company headquarters.
The company said it would telephone about 10,000 customers registered to the Giant Eagle loyalty program whose shopping records show that they bought any of the affected products.
Giant Eagle is offering refunds to customers who bring any recalled product or a proof of purchase on a store receipt.

The email message from the corporate office lists 46 products subject to the recall.
