Call it “Tortillapocalypse,” or the great Taco Bell tortilla shortage of 2019.
Some restaurants “are experiencing supplier shortages,” Taco Bell confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY Wednesday.
“We are working diligently to replenish the supply of our tortillas (used for products like quesadillas and burritos) in those restaurants and encourage fans to try any of our other delicious menu items like the Power Menu Bowl or Cheesy Gordita Crunch in the meantime,” the statement said.
One way to see if your Taco Bell may be affected by the shortage is to look at the menu on the Taco Bell app or website for availability.
For instance, when trying to place an order for a St. Louis, Missouri, location Wednesday night, 13 of the 15 burritos on the menu were shaded out and had a note: “Item not available at your selected restaurant.”
The same was the case at an Arlington, Tennessee, Taco Bell.
In select places checked by USA TODAY, including Stuart, Florida, and Los Angeles, all quesadillas and burritos were available.
Back in June, when a Louisiana Taco Bell ran out of hard and soft tacos – a different shell than what is used for burritos and quesadillas – a consumer called the Slidell Police Department to report the matter.
The police department took to its Facebook page to share what it called “another ‘we can’t make this stuff up’ story.”
“Somebody called in to complain that the Taco Bell on Gause Boulevard ran out of both hard and soft taco shells,” the post said. “While this is truly a travesty, the police can’t do anything about this.”
