Google Maps can already route you around traffic and road closures, but now it will also be able to help you steer clear of areas affected by natural disasters.
Today’s update includes:
- A hurricane forecast that will show up if you are near an area that is likely to be affected by a hurricane
- An earthquake’s shakemap, if an earthquake has recently hit your area
- Flood forecasts in India, where Google points out 20% of global flood related deaths occur
From the card that displays this information, you’ll also be able to send your location to friends and family, or share information about the crisis so you can let others know what areas they should avoid as well.
Later this summer, Google Maps will add similar features to navigation, allowing you to avoid roads and areas on your route that may be affected by a natural disaster.
