How do I get the extra Social Security payment each month?
Social Security beneficiaries can apply for this extra check called Supplemental Security Income if they meet two conditions. The first condition is related to age or having a disability. The second condition relates to the beneficiary’s monthly income.
For clarity, here are the two conditions for applying for and getting Supplemental Security Income each month:
Be age 65 or older or have a disability.
Have low monthly income, as well as low resources.
Each Supplemental Security Income application case is studied independently. So you may have to wait a while before you can start collecting this extra Social Security benefit.
If you have access to a check, you will get a new payment on the 1st day of each month, with some exceptions. For example, in May we will have two payments of this benefit, making the collection of this Social Security payment on the 1st and 31st of May.
The amount that the beneficiaries of this benefit get depends directly on their monthly income. Thus, a beneficiary with less monthly income will have a larger check with a maximum of $943.
It is also good to note that it is not necessary to have retirement activated to get this check. If we have a Social Security retirement, the Supplemental Security Income is compatible, but it is not mandatory to be retired to request the extra monthly benefit.
