I have a few go-to sites when I’m looking for information on products I’m interested in buying, like the Wirecutter, the Strategist and Amazon comments (though you’ll have to be careful there).
These are usually adequate choices, but if you’re looking for more varied reviews, an easy way to find them is to type the name of the product you’re interested in into Google, followed by “vs.” You’ll then be served other popular alternatives, as well as links to review sites you might not have heard of, as Recomendo wrote.
For example, one product I’m interested in buying is an electric toothbrush, but I can never seem to pull the trigger because I don’t know what’s actually worth the cost. I decided to type “Quip vs.” into Google to see what would come up. (For the record, I’m not interested in buying a Quip, but it’s an easy enough name to remember).
The first result that came up is “Quip vs Sonicare & Oral-B” from ElectricTeeth.com, a website that apparently exists. That’s followed up by reviews and comparisons from the Best Electric Toothbrush Club, The Wirecutter, Ask the Dentist, Allure, Reviewed.com, Popular Mechanics and more. An embarrassment of riches!
Next I searched “iPhone XR vs.” Again, I was met with an array of comparison reviews: “Know the differences between iPhone XS and iPhone XR” by Cult of Mac, “iPhone XR vs iPhone XS: Which should you buy?” by 9to5Mac, and on and on.
This tiny hack isn’t ground-breaking, but it is a useful shorthand. And now I’m fairly certain I’m going with Sonicare.
